MAR LEGISLATIVE ACTIVITIES

MAR has been working with Representative Michelle Dunphy to reintroduce LD 1104 An Act To Clarify and Protect Certain Public Service Retirement Benefits. This proposed bill changes the contractual commitment to maintain state-protected benefits regarding cost-of-living adjustments for retired state employees and teachers by specifying that it constitutes a solemn contractual commitment of the State that is protected under the Constitution of Maine and the United States Constitution. This is the same piece of legislation MAR has been working on for several years.

MAR has met with the Speaker of the House and the Senate Majority Leader to inform them of our intent.

MAR will need all our members help to inform the Maine Legislature on the importance of this bill and encourage them to support Public Service Retirees and their financial stability.

In addition to working on the Cost of Living Adjustment legislation, MAR is currently monitoring over sixty (60) bills which have either direct or indirect impact on public service retirees’ financial stability. These bills include proposed changes in Maine Income Taxes, Homestead Exemptions, Health Insurance alterations, property tax modifications, public school funding amendments and other issues important to retirees. MAR will continue to review newly printed bills as they become public.

If you are interested in any of the proposed legislation, please feel free to contact MAR at (207) 582-1960 or email mar@maineretirees.org

As for US Congressional action on the Social Security Windfall Provision and Social Security Government Pension Offset, no hearings have been scheduled.
